Tammy Solonec is a Nyikina woman from Derby in the Kimberley of Western Australia. Since late 2020, Tammy has been engaged by KALACC as Project Coordinator for Jalngangurru Healing, formally known as the Traditional Healing Practices Pilot (THPP). Prior to that from 2014 Tammy was the Indigenous Rights Manager at Amnesty International Australia. Tammy studied law at the University of WA and completed her legal qualifications through the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA, where she worked for four years including as Managing Solicitor of the Law and Advocacy Unit. Prior to that Tammy had a WA public service background working for the WA Departments of Housing and Commerce and the Public Sector Management Office. Throughout her career, Tammy has been involved in advocating for Indigenous peoples on local, state, national and international levels, including extensive work for NAIDOC Perth, and work at the United Nations. Tammy has received a number of awards including the Women’s Justice Award in 2001 for receiving the top mark at UWA for Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Law, she was awarded Young Female Lawyer and Lawyer of the Year for WA in 2012, she has an award named after her for top Aboriginal student at her former High School Mt Lawley SHS, and in 2017 she was inducted in the WA Women’s Hall of Fame for International Women’s Day
